How to Change your Default Browser and Mail Application in iOS 14

Wanna change the default web browser and mail app on your iOS device with iOS version 14? If yes then here is good news for you because finally, iOS allows you to choose a non-apple default browser and app for mails.

Here is the guide on how to change your default browser and mail app in iOS 14. Let’s see and follow the steps one by one.

Android OS is a very flexible operating system that allows you to use any kind of third-party applications and there are almost no restrictions to do anything else with the apps.

But on Apple devices(due to some security reasons), you are forced to use them by default apps dedicated for browsing and emails. But with iOS 14 you finally have a choice to select a different browser and mail app other than the default app.

Apple officially has not implemented this but we will show you below how to do that.

It becomes very frustrating when you open any link from your mail, WhatsApp, Instagram, or from any other app by default the link will be opened in the default browser Safari. Where your sync passwords and other settings are lost if you usually use a competing browser on your PC.

How to Set Your Default Browser in iOS 14 Version

1 - Firstly update your browser from the app store. At this time other browsers like Firefox, Opera, and Brave browser have not implemented the ability to be set as the default browser in iOS 14. But maybe they will be compatible in the near future.

But DuckDuckGo has the capability to be set as the default browser.

2 - Now open the main iOS settings on your device and scroll to the bottom to enter the browser you want to set as the default browser. As with other OS, Apple iOS doesn’t give you the option to choose another browser in the settings.

3 - Now tap on the browser’s enter and then scan down the allow access section until you find the default browser application option.

4 - Tap on the default browser app option.

5 - Choose the browser application you want to set as the default from the list and you are all set.

From now all the links will be opened in the new selected browser by you, not into the default safari browser of iOS.

And in case you want to switch browsers simply go to the Safari section of the main settings of the application, where you will get the option for setting the eligible browser as the default.

After updating the app from the App store some browsers may display a splash page encouraging you to set it as the default. It is surprising that Chrome is not among these. You have to follow the above steps to make it default on your iOS 14 device.

Microsoft Edge also shows the splash screen on your first run after updating to make it default. I assume that all the major web browsers will ask you to make their app the default web browser on your device on the first run. Those browsers that display the suggestion make it simple to set it as your default browser. Otherwise, you have to follow the above process to make it the default browser on your iOS device.

How to Set Your Default Email App in iOS 14

The process of setting or changing your default email application to your favorite app is similar as you change your default browser. It is less effective than setting a browser but I’m used to the conveniences offered for compromising the emails by Outlook so I’m using Apple mail as my default email application on my iOS device.

But for the time being Yahoo and Gmail users can’t set those apps as default email apps on iOS but maybe in the future, we can use them too. Currently, there are limited well-known options are Apple Mail and Microsoft's Outlook.

  1. Firstly update your mail app of choice from the App store.

  2. Now open the settings and scroll down to the email app.

  3. Tap on the app’s entry in the list.

  4. Now find the default mail app entry and tap on it.

  5. Finally, tap on the app you want to set as your default mail app

Isn’t it so simple to change the default email application on your iOS 14? Hope you enjoyed this tutorial and will be able to change your default web browser and email app on your iOS device.
