It becomes so frustrating when we are doing our important work and getting the slow internet speed and can't say no to others not to use the Wifi connection for some time.

There are different tricks you can add a limit to internet speed on other wifi users connected to that wifi network. Isn't it cool?

limit wifi speed for users

By putting a limit on the internet speed of other users you will get the best possible speed and you will be able to do your work at ease. Don't worry about that the other users will know that you have limited the wifi speed for them. They will not know about it, so relax. So let's see how to limit internet speed for other wifi users.

Only you have to take access to your router on your PC, laptop or any smartphone doesn't matters that you are using Ubuntu, Windows, MACOS, Linux, Android, etc. But make sure that the device from which you are going to log in to your router is connected to the router.

Then follow the below steps to complete the process.

There are some requirements you will be needed throughout this whole process:

  • A web browser
  • An active wifi router
  • Router username and password
  • Router Ip Address

To limit the speed of the wifi for other users we have to set up a new rule for the router. This rule can be applied to any company router you are using doesn't matter. We will see the process for two major routers which are used very frequently i.e. TP-Link and D-Link routers.

Step 1

Search for the router's IP address you will find it written below the router on the sticker. Simply flip your router and see on the sticker where other information like model number etc will be written and you will find the IP address of your router there.

Generally, the common router IP address is 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1

After finding the IP address of your router open any web browser on your device which is connected to the same router on which you are going to put a speed limit for others.

Step 2

Simply write the IP address in the search bar of your browser and click enter. Another thing that you will need is the username and the password of your router. The username and the password will be mentioned on the sticker of your router below.

After reaching to login page enter the username and the password of your router and press enter. If you are unable to find the router username and password.

Step 3

Once you logged into the router you will see different tabs there for different features and functions. Click on the status tab. Maybe your router will have another name defined for it like DHCP clients in TP-Link routers.

You will see the users list that is connected to your Wifi router.

Now copy the IP address of the user to which you want to put the wifi speed limit.

How to put Wifi Speed Limit in D-Link Router?

Follow the steps to put wifi speed limit in D-Link routers:

Go to advanced > Traffic control

You will see a section there that will be named QoS Rules click on the Add button

Now paste the IP address which you have copied from the wifi users list and want to put a speed limit on it.

Paste the IP address to the Source Ip and change the Up floor, down floor, Up ceiling, and Down ceiling(the name can be changed depends on the company) to whatever you want.

For example, you want to limit the users to use only 1Mbps speed then write down 1000Kbps and click save/add.

How to reduce the Internet speed on other computers which are connected to the TP-Link router?

Go to the advance routing> Control settings

Now click on the bandwidth control option, now in Engress bandwidth(the download speed) and Ingress bandwidth(the upload speed). Write the maximum speed provided by your ISP. In our case, we have a 100Mpbs connection so we are going to write 10000Kbps(10Mbps) and click on save.

Go to advance routing> Rules list

Paste the Ip address which is copied from the wifi users list and we want to put a limit on them.

Paste the Ip address of the user to the IP range and send minimum bandwidth to 0 and a maximum to whatever you want the user to get limited.

For example 2000 for limiting users to 2Mbps speed and click on save.

The process has been completed -

Now the selected IP users will only enjoy the speed defined by you using these rules.
