How to Customize Your Windows 10 Display and Make it Attractive

Get bored with your simple and default windows 10 display? Let's customize it!

Your windows 10 display is not looking good right. Maybe the texts are seeing small or too large. The screen resolution is not perfect, the colors are not attractive. Don’t worry I will help you to customize your windows 10 display and make it more appealing.

Simply open your Settings > System > Display. The options may be a little different because of the windows 10 version on your computer. For this tutorial, I’m running the latest update of Windows 10 as of early May 2021 on my laptop.

1 - Brightness and Color Settings

Colors are one of the most important parts of a display. The first option you will get there is the Display section and under that Brightness and color or just Color depends on your windows version. You can adjust the color and brightness of your display.

Night Light

It is a very useful feature if you are a late-night user. I personally use this feature because I have to do work at night. This feature protects your eyes from the harsh light coming from your display. Basically, it dims down the intensity of light and changes the color of the white light. Next on the display screen is the Night Light that allows you to modify the color temperature of your monitor to reduce the blue light. Click on the Night Light Settings link to enable this feature or you can schedule it when it should turn on and off.

The next option is Windows HD Color. If you play games and watch videos and OTT content more then this feature will be very interesting for you. This setting will offer you more vibrant colors for a better viewing experience. But make sure that the display is set to your primary source if you have more than 1 display.

Display Capabilities

The display capability section tells you which HDR capabilities are supported by your computer and monitor - Use HDR, Use WCG apps, and Stream HDR video. If all three options are labeled as NO then there is nothing you can do with your screen because it’s showing that your screen doesn’t support these features.

If Stream HDR video is labeled as YES then your display is capable of streaming HDR videos. Turn on the switch below for enjoying the Stream HDR video.

After that, you will need to calibrate the display for HDR video. Simply click on the Change Calibration settings link on the page then hover the cursor over the thumbnail video and click the double arrow to view it on full screen. Adjust the slider as per your requirement to the right balance between details in the buildings on the left side and details in the mountains on the right side. When it is done click the double arrow to exit the full screen.

If you are using a laptop you can return to the Windows HD color settings and adjust the battery options because HDR consumes more battery than the normal mode. Under the battery option, you can optimize your display for more battery life. Check the box next to the Don’t allow streaming HDR video on the battery to shut the settings off when you unplug the laptop. Personally, I don’t consume multimedia so any of these features are useless for me.

2 - Color Management Settings

Fine-tune your colors further in the control panel. Open your control panel. Click on Color Management and select the advanced tab. Now select the Calibrate display button and follow the instructions in the color calibration tool. Then you will be asked to adjust the brightness, contrast, color balance, and gamma of the screen.

When you finish it Windows will take you to ClearType Tuner. But make sure the ClearType function is turned on and then view the five thumbnail screens of text to decide which one looks best on each page. When you are gone through all the TrueType screens and click the finish button.

3 - Scale and Resolution

You can also control the size and resolution of your computer screen from the display settings menu under the scale and layout header. By default, windows set these items based on the default recommended settings by the system, but if you find the on-screen text is too small or the screen resolution is not correct you can also change them.

Text hard to read? Simply open the dropdown menu under Change the size of text, apps, and other items to make the screen larger by intervals of 25%.

You will get 4 options 100% - 124% - 150%(recommended size) - 175

You can also tweak the scaling more accurately by clicking on the Advanced scaling settings and adding a custom number between 100 to 500.

You will need to sign out of windows for these changes to go live. If the application appears blurry when you change display settings beyond their recommended values, turn on the switch or Let Windows try to fix apps so they are not blurry.

Every computer display is optimized for a suitable resolution based on the size of the display, it's quality(LED panel, LCD panel, QHD, etc), and other factors. But you can still change by using the Display resolution drop-down menu from the display settings.

Change to different resolutions to test how they fit on your screen if you choose any improper resolution simply click on the Revert button to go back.

The orientation of the screen should automatically be set and it is based on whether you are using it in Tablet mode or the normal computer mode. If the orientation is incorrect or you want to change it for any reason, just click on the drop-down menu for Display orientation and switch it to the Portrait or Landscape mode.

4 - Multiple Monitor Settings

If you are using multiple displays at the same time such as a built-in monitor and an external monitor(mostly programmer uses) you can rearrange the displays and determine how the cursor transitions between the two monitors(displays or screens).

Click and drag the boxes at the top of the display settings page until they are oriented how you want to set them. Now click on the apply button to save your changes.

If you don’t know which box corresponds to which screen, click on the identifier and a number will appear on each of the screens you are using. If you are trying to add a new display to the mix and windows don’t detect the display automatically then click on the detect to have the system perform a quick search.

There are also some additional settings under the Multiple display section where you can choose what the second display will show. Open the drop-down menu to have your monitor extend the display, duplicate the display, and use only one display.

Click on Connect to a wireless display if you are trying to use a wireless device like your smartphone, tablet, smart TV, or whatever. Now click on detect to connect it automatically.

Click on Advanced display settings to view and change the refresh rate of your screen and other settings. At the next screen click on Display adapter properties to view the properties for your graphics adapter, change the refresh rate, view, and switch to the different resolution, manage the color settings, etc.

So this was the tutorial about customizing your windows 10 display for a better viewing experience and functionalities.
